Central Coast Chaos (2001)

This little video has taken three years to get here. Newsense skateboards was Kory Kroll and Kris Kroll's Los Osos based skate company. They made boards, shirts, stickers, and videos. Central Coast Chaos was their first video effort, filled with lo-fi tape deck editing. The formats were all completely different from camera to camera so it's a miracle this thing even got done. Probably the trick with the most hype was Mike Salmon's Slo High 17 stair attempt. Gotta love the basketball shorts! After this video it seemed like everyone in Los Osos and Morro Bay had a Newsense board and were laughing at the pink man on the unicycle. As time went on though, the videos slowly disappeared. I thought I had the last existing copy until I lent it out and it got ate up by a VCR. With the help of Kory Kroll (who didn't have the video himself) we tracked down what I believe is the absolute last copy. The video was an ultimate inspiration for the 14 year old me who couldn't comprehend how they edited it themselves. It's taken a long time to get here, but it was well worth it.

The Photographer's Excuse

No matter how big a handrail is, when it's the first spot of the day it's easy to come up with an excuse to not skate it.  Despite sucking a taking photos, I happily hid behind the lens while Zach made quick work of this rail.

$$$$How to Make Money$$$$

So we here at Unearthed/Jazzpush headquarters came up with a brilliant way to promote skateboarding without actually skateboarding. The answer my friend, is modeling, and none of that Team Handsome crap either, those guys actually skate. Instead we got someone clueless enough to compete with Nike! By the time you read this, everyone in the Jazzpush Video has been kicked off from sticker flow and are now replaced by the above. Who needs tricks when you have a double mall grab with attitude? Hopefully this will become the multi-million dollar marketing scheme we've been looking for. Get ready for the big bucks boys, because we're ready to cash in! Photo by the Eli Stein talent agency.

Perks of a Poor Economy

Sacramento is stocked full of abandoned buildings that make weekday skating a go.  This barren industrial spot would get anybody hyped to skate.  If you have never seen Lee Yankou's Think ad bashing the top of this thing, I'd suggest it!

Dredge the Lethe - Laguna Ledge

Taking a look back at the chunkiest ledges in Slo.

Sadly enough, the first time I ever heard of a pro skating a spot in slo was this Brian Sumner ad for hair products. Despite the product placement and the choppy sequence, I was pretty excited to see Laguna in print. From Skateboarder Magazine, November 2003

For years I waited for the footage to turn up in a video but it never made it. That was until, classic clips made a Brian Sumner part.

With the help of Michael Mull, I saw the Sumner clips and some amazing Mark Appleyard footage that never made it to video. How did a tre flip noseslide not get a proper showing?

Nick Walters grind up Laguna was absolutely ridiculous, but he was not the first person to go up it. A now forgotten Stacy Lowry had a fs noseslide up it back in 2005.

The now defunct 411 put out a Stereo issue in 2004 which covered a tour from LA to SF. The Stereo guys made a stop in Slo to shoot a commercial and skate some spots. Keep an eye out for the Benny Fairfax nollie at Madonna center and the Clint Peterson fs board at Denny's.

Nerd Out - FTC Edition

When mentioning Brendan Leddy and tricks in videos, I began to think of another SLO skater...

In Daniel Parks recent part for The Jazzpush Video, we threw in some old SF footage for the intro. One trick that stood out was his backside five-0 to frontside 180 out at Brown Marble.

I recently watched "Finally" by FTC, and noticed Scott Johnston had the same trick in his part.

.

So does Greg Hunt in "A Visual Sound" by Stereo.

Daniel does a nollie inward heel at Miley in the beginning of "Dig This".

Chico Brenes gets the same trick in "Finally".

That's it for today. If you haven't seen "Finally" or "A Visual Sound" I recommend you look them up. I'm planning on covering some rarely seen Laguna Ledge clips for next week.

Way Out East

Someone just uploaded Brendan Leddy's sponsor me footage from when he was trying to get on Chapman in 2002. The footage is insane, and the kickflip noseslide is unbelievable! Heath Kirchart did a 50-50 on that ledge in 2001 for Sight Unseen. Did Brendan trick wise, one up Heath Kirchart? He already took out Pappalardo, so why not?

Long Hot Summer Day

The Tuesday Club met today and did work.

Little Daniel started things off with a hefty 2nd try front grind. The door in the right of the photo was opened mid-pop by an old asian woman yelling and threatening to call the police.

We then went to the most photogenic spot ever, and ironically the hardest spot to skate ever. Nate- 180

The Jazzpush Video - John Lucas

John Luc closes the video with an outstanding part. John has been in every video I've made dating back to 2004. It's rare to skate with someone that long, all the way from your early teens to mid twenties. Despite a hectic work schedule, The Yeti pulled out a five minute part with most footage filmed in the late afternoon. Nobody can deny his switch ability and gigantic pop, but that last boardslide was just ridiculous. A good friend showed us the rail five years ago, and with multiple battles John never even got close. It was three days before the video premiere when he made it. Thanks so much to John Lucas and everyone else in the video who put all the time and effort to make this happen! If anyone still wants a free copy of the video, email jazzpush@yahoo.com

The Jazzpush Video - Daniel Parks

How incredibly awesome is Daniel Parks! He had the chance to skate classic SF spots, worked at skate camp, has a family, and still puts out parts because he loves skateboarding. Dan is a true inspiration to all skaters and has one of the meanest nollieflips in the 40 and up bracket! His part was especially fun to edit because of his choice song selection.

Intermission

Taking an intermission from the Jazzpush Video...

After a long await, "I Thought We Were Bros" is being released in parts online. Check it out and subscribe to Phat Pile.

They made another awesome montage of recent footage.

Stephen Figueira just uploaded some extra clips he filmed when working on the video. We used the HD as throwaway and kept the shaky VX. I have to admit, these looked pretty good for HD.

Another Jazzpush part on Friday.

The Jazzpush Video - Montage

All the non full parts but just as satisfying as one. Cody and Tristan have been around for a while now, with little footage to show over the last ten years. It's not their fault, they've always been skating for the right reasons, but in a small area like Slo, the camera is not always there. This site is a homage to Slo county skateboarding, the small fish in the small pond, and I feel someone needs to recognize it. That's why I had a great time filming them especially. Cody has been skating Baywood for the better part of twenty years now.

Then there are the younger guys like Jade who are tough to get in front of a lens. You know he's good, but he's either filming or doesn't want to be filmed. If you have the DVD, you can at least get a better glimpse in the bonus section, or just watch him in person. Jade's footage was a huge contribution to the video so either way, he was a great help. Berkeley was a late addition to the video and probably could of had a full part if we were filming a couple months prior. All the footage of Berkeley was in the span of about four different sessions. Look at his clothes, he's wearing the same thing in most of it.

Brendan was another who joined late in the project and I was super excited about it because of his natural skill. His short ends part is unbelievable, and for him, this is just something he does whenever he goes and skates. Isn't that the point though? Just going out and skating with friends?

Thanks to Barton Boris Bodrian for the band reference.

The Jazzpush Video - Andy Littlefield

Andy is one of my favorite skaters to watch. He skates with so much power and is the nicest, most mellow guy. Andy moved to Sacramento right as the project was gaining momentum so what you see is only about six months worth of filming instead of two years. Thanks to Jade Sadeghian, who filmed the majority of Andy's part.

The Jazzpush Video - Intro and Stephen Figueira

The video that felt like it took forever is finally here. We spent about two years working on this project. The first year was mostly a bust, with terrible filming, shaky lenses, and general confusion. Those vx cameras feel so good to film with but are almost more trouble than it's worth with limited playback and the expense of tapes. I wanted this video to be dedicated to Oscar Gonzalez, which three years ago today was the first time I ever met him at Go Skate Day 2010. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the video and hopefully you will want to go skate afterwards.

Stephen Figueira
Stephen's part seemed to always work out perfectly. He was extremely easy to film, mostly getting tricks within the first 15 minutes. I also think he found one of the best songs in the video. Stephen really embodied what I wanted from this project, which was a solid skater that made me want to go out and have fun! Thanks to Darren Munoz for the additional clips around Long Beach.

90's Steve

Steve is one of my biggest influences in skating. I remember I met him at Los Osos park and he was doing pressure flips and late shove its. These parts (especially the Steely Dan one) embodies what I love about skating. Steve cruises with an improvisation that's missing in modern skating. There needs to be more Steve Money's in this world.
